Not dead, not irrelevant. Just not the whole picture anymore. AI agents have started visiting websites the way people do, except they don't read your homepage hero banner and leave. They poke around. They try to search your product catalog, check if something's in stock, compare your pricing against two competitors. If your site lets them do that, great. If it doesn't, they move on to one that does.

Agentic SEO is the practice of making your website usable by autonomous AI agents. Functional, not just indexable. An agent should be able to land on your site and do something, whether that's searching your inventory or booking a demo.

This is different from traditional SEO (getting ranked on Google) and GEO (getting cited in AI-generated answers). Agentic SEO adds a third layer: making your site a tool that agents can operate, not just a page they can read.

For twenty years, search worked like this: Googlebot crawled your site, indexed your pages, ranked them. Users typed a query, got a list of blue links, clicked one.

That still happens. But there's a parallel system now.

AI agents powered by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others don't just crawl and index. They browse, evaluate things, and execute tasks. An agent might visit your site, search your product catalog, compare your prices against a competitor, and add something to a cart. No human touches a browser.

AI agent interactions with websites grew over 300% in 2025, and the trajectory hasn't flattened. By late 2026, agents will likely account for a real share of commercial web traffic. This shift is reshaping the future of SEO in ways most marketers haven't fully grasped yet.

What this means practically: a growing percentage of your site's "visitors" aren't people. They're software acting on behalf of people. And they need different things than a human casually scrolling your homepage.

Why traditional SEO isn't enough on its own

Your site might rank well on Google. Your content might be solid. But when an AI agent visits, it sees HTML with no way to take action.

Traditional SEO handles discoverability. It makes sure search engines can find and rank your content. But discoverability without actionability is a dead end in the agentic web.

AI agents need structured tools. They need machine-readable descriptions of what your site can do, not just what it says. They need to know "this site has a product search tool" or "I can check pricing here."

Without those, your site shows up in search results but an agent can't do anything useful with it. That gap between being findable and being usable is what agentic SEO addresses.

The ranking factors that actually matter for agents

Google's algorithm cares about backlinks, content quality, and page speed. AI agents care about different things. Here are the four that matter most.

Tool discoverability

This is the big one, and most marketers haven't encountered it yet.

Tool discoverability means: can an AI agent find and use the functionality your site offers?

When all three are in place, agents can understand your site without guessing. They know what you sell, what content you publish, what tools are available. Without structured data, they're flying blind. And agents that have to guess tend to leave.

Content authority

This is where agentic SEO overlaps with GEO.

AI agents don't just interact with your site. They evaluate it. When an agent is comparing options for a user, it weighs your authority the same way a careful human researcher would.

E-E-A-T signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) still matter. But there's a wrinkle that I find interesting: agents heavily favor original research and first-party data. If you publish your own statistics, case studies with real numbers, or proprietary research, agents are significantly more likely to trust and recommend your site.

Content that just restates what ten other sites say? Agents skip it. They're looking for sources that contribute something that doesn't already exist elsewhere.

If you want to win here, make content that only your company can make. Your own data and customer insights are genuinely hard for competitors to replicate, which is exactly what makes them valuable to agents.

Technical performance

Agents are less patient than humans, which is saying something.

When an agent calls a tool on your site (say, a product search) it expects a response in milliseconds. Slow or unreliable tools get deprioritized in future interactions.

What "good" looks like here:

  • Response times under 500ms for all tool calls
  • Consistent outputs with no errors, timeouts, or unexpected formats
  • 24/7 uptime, because agents don't keep business hours
  • Clean error handling that returns useful messages, not broken pages

If you sent a personal assistant to two stores and one answered questions immediately while the other had a ten-minute wait, which store would that assistant visit next time? Same logic applies here.

How to build your agentic SEO strategy

Here's the practical part. Three phases, starting with figuring out where you are today.

Audit where you stand

Before changing anything, run through these five questions:

  1. Do you have WebMCP tools registered? If not, agents can't interact with your site beyond reading text.
  2. Is your schema markup covering your main pages? Check products, articles, and FAQ sections.

Here's where content strategy meets agentic SEO, and honestly, most of this is just good writing practice.

Write paragraphs that stand on their own. Agents often extract individual paragraphs, so if yours depend on the sentence before them to make sense, the extracted version falls apart.

Define concepts in single, clear sentences. "Agentic SEO is the practice of optimizing websites for autonomous AI agents." That's something an agent can pull and cite directly.

Use tables and lists for comparisons instead of burying them in prose. Agents parse structured formats much more reliably.

Add FAQ sections to your important pages. Real questions, answered directly in two to four sentences. The Q&A format is already structured the way agents expect to find information.

Include specific numbers wherever possible. "73% of marketers" gives an agent something concrete to work with. "Most marketers" doesn't.

Most of this probably sounds like good content strategy in general. It is. Agentic SEO and good writing have more overlap than you might expect.

How agentic SEO fits with traditional SEO and GEO

People ask me whether they need to choose between these three. You don't. But it helps to understand what each one does.

They reinforce each other. Good SEO builds the domain authority that AI engines trust for citations, and well-structured content makes it easier for agents to interact with your site.

Where to focus based on your business

Different businesses should weight these differently.

If you're in e-commerce, lean hard into agentic SEO. AI shopping agents are already comparing products and recommending purchases. If your catalog isn't accessible through structured tools, those agents are shopping at your competitors.

SaaS companies should balance GEO and agentic SEO. You want AI engines citing your thought leadership content when users research solutions, and you want agents to be able to compare your features or trigger a demo.

Content publishers should focus primarily on GEO. Getting your articles cited by AI engines is the main opportunity. Agentic SEO is secondary for now, though tools that let agents search your archive or pull specific data are worth exploring.

Local businesses should keep prioritizing traditional SEO for local search. Add basic agentic SEO over time (business info tools, appointment booking) as AI assistants handle more local queries.

Start with whichever of the three drives the most revenue for your business. Build the others around it.

I'll be direct: agentic SEO is early. Most sites haven't started. That's both the risk and the opportunity.

The sites that set up WebMCP tools and start thinking about agent usability now are going to have a real head start. Not because the technology is complicated (it isn't, really) but because most companies are still waiting to see if this matters.

It does. Agent traffic is growing. The question isn't whether to do this, it's when.
